Announcing $3.9 million in new grants

At their second board meeting of the year, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Trustees in June approved $3,899,500 million in 90 grants to New Jersey nonprofit organizations for work in the arts, education, environment, and informed communities.

The grants include 45 grants totaling $1,645,500 in Arts, one $395,000 grant in Environment, 32 grants totaling $1,207,000 in Education, seven grants totaling $510,000 in Informed Communities, and five additional grants totaling $142,000 in Technical Assistance and other initiatives.

  • 10 Hairy Legs (Highland Park, Middlesex County): $15,000 for general operating support for the 2019-20 dance season and education programs. Program Area: Arts
  • Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre (Woodbridge, Middlesex County): $15,000 for general operating support for performance season and programs. Program Area: Arts
  • Algonquin Arts  (Manasquan, Monmouth County): $5,000 for general operating support for the 2019-20 season and arts and education programs. Program Area: Arts

  • Appel Farm Arts and Music Center (Elmer, Salem County): $65,000 to provide general operating support for Appel Farm's transformative arts education programs and the development of an arts integration curriculum for their new charter school. Program Area: Education
  • Arden Theatre Company (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania): $15,000 for support of the Arden for All in-school arts education and arts access program in Camden public schools. Program Area: Education
  • Art Pride New Jersey Foundation (Burlington, Burlington County): $135,000 for general operating support to advance ongoing statewide efforts that preserve and increase support of the arts through advocacy, promotion, industry-wide leadership.   • Arts Council of Princeton (Princeton, Mercer County): $10,000 for general operating support of the gallery exhibition season, educational programming and community events. Program Area: Arts
  • Arts Ed NJ (Warren, Somerset County): $145,000 to support Arts Ed NJ's work in advancing arts education for all children throughout the state with additional support for a new Social Emotional Learning and the Arts task force. Program Area: Education
  • Artworks (Trenton, Mercer County): $40,000 for general operating support and includes capacity building resources for art programming and events serving Trenton citizens and neighboring communities as the organization rebounds from the Art All Night shooting incident last year.   • Atlantic City Ballet (Atlantic City, Atlantic County): $17,500 to help support professional performances and educational outreach programming for Atlantic City Ballet's 2019-20 season. Program Area: Arts
  • Barat Foundation (Newark, Essex County): $15,000 for support of "Public Arts by the Public" arts education programming, bringing Animodule initiatives to under-resourced youth throughout New Jersey. Program Area: Education

  • Children's Home Society of New Jersey (Trenton, Mercer County): $32,500 to support school-based dance education to over 200 Trenton students in grades 5-10. Program Area: Education
  • Creative New Jersey (Morristown, Morris County): $255,000 for statewide programming fostering creativity and inclusive cross-sector-collaboration, advancing dialogue on urgent issues, weaving networks to build equitable communities, and to develop an enhanced evaluation platform.   • Crossroads Theatre Company (New Brunswick, Middlesex County): $55,000 for general operating support for the 2019-20 season that lifts up the African American experience and stories and includes additional funding for organizational stabilization as it transitions to its permanent home.   • Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre (Summit, Union County): $10,000 for general operating support for the 2019-20 season and capacity building. Program Area: Arts
  • Dodge Artful Teaching Initiative (Morristown, Morris County): $27,500 for continued support of the arts integration teacher and teaching artists training effort, including support for the development of culturally responsive training for this constituency.
  • Educational Arts Team (Jersey City, Hudson County): $20,000 to support professional development for Jersey City teachers that infuses theater arts integration lessons into the language arts curriculum with the goal of increasing student academic performance and voice. Program Area: Education
  • Folger Shakespeare Library (Washington, DC): $7,500 to plan, alongside Rutgers Graduate School of Education, a new program creating culturally relevant resources and practices for learning Shakespeare. Program Area: Education

  • Gallery Aferro (Newark, Essex County): $35,000 for general operating support for a Newark arts and cultural hub connecting diverse communities and includes resources for increased activity and services to artists as the result of the closure of two local galleries in the past two years.   • Little Kids Rock (Verona, Essex County): $50,000 to train more teachers, serve more students, and advance modern band as an equity-based music reform movement. Program Area: Education
  • Local News Lab Fund at the Community Foundation of New Jersey (Morristown, Morris County): $50,000 to launch a Community Voices Fund supporting community-based organizations and community-news collaborations working to tell untold stories and shape new narratives through a racial lens to amplify voices in communities of color.   • Newark Arts Council (Newark, Essex County): $30,000 for general operating support to bolster Greater Newark's arts and cultural economy, and improve the quality of life for artists, residents and stakeholders and includes support for implementation of Newark Creates its recent community cultural plan.   • Newark Arts Council (Newark, Essex County): $30,000 for support of the Newark Arts Education Roundtable's efforts to ensure every Newark student has access to a sequential arts education and to help NAER develop new trauma-informed arts training programming for teachers and teaching artists.   • Young Audiences New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania (Princeton, Middlesex County): $80,000 to support the development and implementation of a New Jersey sequential theater-integrated curriculum for grades 2-5 and Young Audience's research and development of arts integration models.
