Green Design: Floors

Materials for the floors throughout Dodge were selected based on factors such as reused or recycled content material, rapidly renewable materials, and low- or non-toxic materials.

As we mentioned in the previous section on Bamboo, Cork and Flax, cork floors made from cork oak trees are unique because the bark can be stripped without damaging the tree. The bark regenerates and can be subsequently stripped over and over again in 10 year cycles.

In our kitchen and in our pantry, we selected a Fritz GlassTile flooring, which contains 100% recycled glass content, and about 50% recycled content overall.

We also selected Shaw’s environmentally friendly carpets, which is made of 25% recycled content and a nylon fiber that can be recycled endlessly into new carpet material.

And in our bathrooms, the “EcoCycle” brand floors are manufactured using leftover scraps, so that the end product uses at least 40% recycled content.
