Living Wall
What is a Living Wall?
Put simply, a living wall is a vertical garden. Plants are rooted in layers of porous material that is attached to a concrete wall. The plants are held in place by their roots, which grow downward between the layers. Typically a living wall is connected to the building’s HVAC system, and fans pull air through the wall into the office spaces depending upon the humidity and temperature in the rooms. Bacteria in the plants’ roots act as a natural air filter which remove VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and CO2 (carbon dioxide) from the air as it passes through the wall into the building’s office spaces.
Water is pumped to the top of the wall and cascades down between the layers, wetting the roots of the plants. As the water trickles down, it is collected at the bottom and pumped back to the top. At the same time, the plants are dusted, wetted, and pruned to ensure their vitality and to maximize the benefits of the living wall.
Why have a Living Wall?
Located between the two floors that Dodge will occupy, this living wall is both a central aesthetic feature to the office, and it is a beautiful solution to improving indoor air quality in a building, as researchers are increasingly establishing a link between indoor air quality and the productivity and health of individuals.
The wall requires no more maintenance than any other indoor landscaping feature. The plants are all chosen to spread no pollen, and the constantly running water and fresh air stop mold from getting a foothold.
