Visual Arts Initiative

Intertwined by Jean Burdick, Visual Artist/Educator Fellow

The deadline for the Visual Artist/Educator awards
for the summer of 2009 has passed.

The Foundation's Visual Arts Initiative was launched in 1992 to enliven the role of the visual arts in New Jersey public schools. The design of the program allows artists time to pursue their own art as well as receive professional development as art teachers. Awards of $5,000 each are given to visual artists who teach or supervise Art in New Jersey's public schools to pursue their artistic dream during the summer of the grant year. Follow-up grants of up to $2,000 each are awarded in the fall to enable recipients to implement a visual arts project in their respective schools. Artist/educators who produce or exhibit works of art beyond classroom examples, have taught the visual arts for at least three years, and will be continuing as Visual Arts teachers in the school year following the initial $5,000 award are invited to apply. Previous recipients of this award are not eligible.

The purpose of these grants is to:

  • Provide visual artist/educators with the opportunity to spend a summer rejuvenating themselves as artists.
  • Encourage them to explore new ways of integrating and fostering the visual arts across the curriculum.
  • Incorporate them into a network of accomplished artist/educators with similar aspirations and professional concerns.

Applicants are free to choose projects that will enable them to develop artistically. Proposals may be for studio time and rental, studio construction, classes and workshops, art projects, and travel expenses and equipment that relate to artistic pursuits. The requirements of the program are the design of a cross-disciplinary visual arts project to be implemented within each recipient’s school, a report and presentation following the initial and follow-up grants, and participation in two meetings. Participants are encouraged to become actively involved in Foundation activities with previous visual arts awardees.
