To support the Bringing Literature to Life arts-integration program in Jersey City Public Schools that will improve teaching methods and increase student academic performance by infusing theatre and improvisational arts into the language arts curriculum.
Through the power of the arts the Educational Arts Team provides young people with experiences that transform hearts and minds. We believe that the arts are an essential way to help young people realize academic success, increase self-worth, and create a vision of a positive future.
To that end EAT incorporated in 1981 to improve literacy for low income urban students in underperforming schools and provide positive cultural, social and recreational experiences during the summer months for local children. We achieve these goals through the two branches of our organization, Dramatic Impact and Camp Liberty.
Dramatic Impact is our in-school literacy program, helping economically disadvantaged young people become better readers and writers, as well as socially mature individuals. We use highly engaging arts integration strategies that are connected to the school and classroom curriculum and that support the Common Core State Standards. Independent researchers have documented how our literacy work has helped thousands of young people increase their academic achievement, and improve pro-social, cognitive and critical thinking skills.
During eight weeks of the summer we operate Camp Liberty, providing artistic, cultural, social and recreational experiences for young people of diverse ages, races, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds.
Whether it's in the classroom or at a summer day camp, we inspire children to get excited about learning, interact with one another meaningfully, and learn how to better communicate face-to-face and pencil to paper.
Did you know that, according to a 2010 study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average child in the United States currently spends 8 hours every day on electronic media and just 38 minutes reading?
We believe this is why teachers tell us how difficult it is for students to discuss, negotiate and share their ideas, and why they notice how engaged students become in our workshops.
We often hear how children who never raise their hands or share their ideas are able to do so in our workshops and how easily they are able to communicate their ideas in writing once they have participated in our activities.
