For general operating support of Freespace Dance's performance season and education programs.
Freespace is a modern dance company noted for emotionally driven work in a bold athletic signature style based on controlled abandonment and pushing the limits of inventive partnering. As described by the New York Times, "Human Relationships are the focus of Donna Scro Samori and her Freespace Dance Company."
Freespace is dedicated to performing works by Artistic Director, Donna Scro Samori, which the Star Ledger noted for containing, "a recognizable human element [that] surfaces wordlessly and goes straight to the heart." In 2008 she received a Fellowship from the NJSCA for her outstanding choreography. A former principal dancer with the Nikolais/Louis Dance Company and a founding member of Sean Curran Company, Scro Samori's work seeks to reveal deeply rooted human connections that may not be readily apparent.
Freespace was incorporated in New Jersey in 2004 as a welcoming forum for collaboration in the creation of and education in modern dance. The company's philosophy is that dance reaches beyond the capacity of verbal language to people of all ages and backgrounds, and that dance can be rediscovered through collaboration with artists working in other media. These collaborations extend through every stage of the artistic process from conception into rehearsal and through performance to achieve a common vision. Engaging both the more traditional dance audience and the general community is one of our most important core values. Freespace brings a fearless, experimental, and humanistic voice to New Jersey's modern dance community.
With those imperatives, in FY14 FSD opened "The Space" as a permanent home for itself and a forum for other regional performing artists. Given Donna Scro Samori's approach to dance-making a home base is essential. Here she can work closely, and over time, with the company, guest dancers, musicians, writers, and others. Freespace curates a series by other choreographers and artists of other disciplines. In doing so the company has become all that its mission has always embodied; it is truly an organization where artists are coming together in collaboration and in sharing work. FSD is now an organization of creation, performance, presentation, and artistic leadership in our immediate community, and the state.
