Founded in 1985, the mission of the Camden City Garden Club (CCGC) is to inspire and educate people of all ages by providing opportunities to improve their quality of life, health and community through horticulture.
For nearly 3 decades, CCGC has been an integral part of the well-being of Camden, New Jersey, bringing access, education and skills related to healthy food/eating; proving food security; preK-8 science education, and job training/employment to its residents -- one of the poorest in the Nation -- through the utilization of 141 community and 95 backyard gardens enabling residents to grow fruits and vegetables for themselves, their families and neighbors; maintains 2 one acre and 1 half acre urban farms that produce food which then is distributed to the neighborhood and sold at the Camden Children's Garden Market to provide a supply of fresh food for Camden residents. GrowLab, a hands-on nutrition/horticulture education program serves 1,700 children at Camden private, public and parochial school and daycare centers; the Camden Children's Garden, founded in 1999, is a 4½ acre interactive horticultural educational facility located on the Camden waterfront. CCGC works with 30 faith-based programs addressing childhood obesity, and for 20 years has conducted the Youth Training and Employment Program which offers at-risk youth the opportunity for paid employment, scholastic mentorship and life/employment skills; over 325 students have participated thus far.
