To support the Office of the Newark Philanthropic Liaison: improving Newark through collaboration between grantmakers and the Newark Mayor's Office on aligned goals and priorities.

Organization Background

The Council of New Jersey Grantmakers (CNJG) exists to strengthen and promote effective philanthropy throughout the State of New Jersey, becoming an independent 501(c) (3) organization in 1996. CNJG has risen to be recognized as the voice of philanthropy in the State. CNJG has a membership of more than 125 grantmaking organizations including family, private, community, independent and corporate foundations. Corporate giving programs and federated funds are also among CNJG's members. CNJG is a full-service membership organization for New Jersey's philanthropic sector. Remaining on the cutting edge of best practices and model programs, the Council collaborates with other regional associations of grantmakers across the country through membership in the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers. The Forum's thirty-three member associations coast-to-coast maintain an open dialogue and share information, programming and challenges in the field of philanthropy.

The Newark Philanthropic Liaison initiative was established in 2007 through an agreement between CNJG and then Newark Mayor Booker. Prior to that time, the grantmaking community did not have a bona fide voice in the Mayor's office. Conversely, the city did not have a vehicle to leverage philanthropic alliances and help devise public-private funding for policy and programmatic initiatives. Jeremy Johnson serves at the Newark Philanthropic Liaison.

The overall objectives are to continue linking Newark City Hall with the philanthropic community; and to leverage grantmakers' ability to work with the new administration of Mayor Ras J. Baraka. As Mayor Baraka's administration begins its first term, the Office of the Newark Philanthropic Liaison will continue to address pressing issues identified by foundations and city hall leadership. The Office will ensure that Newark-interested philanthropies have access to information and resources that educate them on the needs of the city.

Johnson reports to CNJG President Nina Stack and a core group of nine funders, including the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, who provide support to the Council to fund the Liaison position.
