For strengthening Bayshore Center at Bivalve's experiential education platforms and community programming to connect children, families, community leaders and governmental agencies to New Jersey's Delaware Bayshore. BCB ignites people's passion and instills personal accountability while collectively building a stronger, healthier, more resilient Bayshore community.

Organization Background

The recently renamed Bayshore Center at Bivalve was founded in 1988 by its current Executive Director with the goal of restoring the 1928 oyster schooner A.J. MEERWALD to become a hands on classroom and symbolic rallying point for Delaware Bay. The concept struck a chord in the community - one of NJ's most struggling townships in its most depressed county with some of its richest landscapes, vibrant ecosystems and an incredible maritime heritage.

Now entering its 26th year and 19th sailing season, BCB's mission is to motivate people to take care of the environment, the culture and the history of New Jersey's Bayshore Region through education, preservation and example. Though BCB serves people across NJ, the Bayshore communities of Cumberland County receive free programs targeted to connect children and families to their natural environment and cultural heritage.

Since 1995, BDP has worked to purchase and restore the 1904 Oyster Shipping Sheds in Bivalve to provide a base for its programming. Now open, the Bayshore Center houses the Delaware Bay Museum & Folklife Center, exhibit space, classrooms, art gallery, café, a gift shop, and offices.

Meghan Wren provides vision and continuity, and, working in collaboration with her diverse team, ensures that the organization maximizes its impact. The MEERWALD's Captain leads the crew of sailors and educators who come to Bivalve from all over the country. Two Education Coordinators (Shipboard & Shore-based), a Director of Marine Operations, a Curator, a Volunteer Coordinator/Cafe Manager, an Outreach Coordinator, a Director of Development/Marketing and a Bookkeeper complete the staff. Over 200 regular volunteers round out the team.
