To advance the careers of artists; expand the audience for contemporary art; and combine art and technology to build communities, careers and contemporary culture through our award-winning education/mentorship programs.
City Without Walls (cWOW), New Jersey's oldest non-profit contemporary art gallery, has been based in Newark since 1975. A multi-year winner of the New Jersey State Council on the Art's 'Citation of Excellence,' The New York Times has characterized cWOW a 'one of the most socially engaged and dynamic art spaces in the state,' and 'the nucleus' of Newark's Lincoln Park community for our anchor role in the renaissance of this neighborhood in transition.
Our award-winning education programs, including ArtReach, Newark New Media, and City Murals, provide mentoring and apprenticeships to help local youth develop professional skills in the arts and technology. Our exhibition programs feature local and travelling shows as well as public art that engages local, national, and international audiences. cWOW's programs are the product of extensive collaborations among artists, community leaders and engaged friends from New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area. cWOW's key partners include guest curators and the many stakeholders in our community partnerships. Our vision is to help brand Newark as a center for artistic innovation and enterprise.
