Organization Background

Mile Square Theatre (MST) was founded in 2003. A not-for-profit, professional company, we produce contemporary and classical works of theatre and offer theatre arts education programming. Our mission is to offer outstanding arts and cultural activities in northern New Jersey and the surrounding region.

MST is committed to providing vibrant, high-quality and affordable arts enrichment opportunities -- encouraging creative engagement and catalyzing enhanced social well-being. As a professional theatre, we compensate all production artists and are able to bring exceptional talent to the region. We make every effort to ensure that admission is fairly priced; we have never charged more than $30 for a single ticket, and we routinely offer free and pay-what-you-will performances, and discounts for school groups, children, students, and seniors.

MST has contributed to the cultural landscape and promoted the arts since our founding, and we are growing: our audience increased by 60 percent year-over-year in 2013, and around 20 percent of patrons now reside outside Hudson County -- in New Jersey and New York City's five boroughs.

Each season MST offers two mainstage productions for general audiences, and one for families and children; several play festivals; a summer camp for young children; and a high school drama internship. Founded as a floating theatre, we have maintained residence in the Monroe Center for the Arts since 2008. We are now completing a merger with Hoboken Children's Theater, a group we have worked closely with for many years, and with whom we share our theatre venue; in 2014, we will offer an expanded roster of children's programming as a result of this partnership.

MST is led by founder Chris O'Connor, currently serving as a theatre professor at the University of Miami, Florida, who has a sustained 30-year career as an actor and director. The artistic leadership team also includes Anne Teutschel, a producer, director, and actress, Joseph Gallo, a playwright, and Matthew Lawler, a seasoned actor in stage, film, and commercials. MST has an active board of local community leaders that is involved in strategic planning, marketing, audience development, and fundraising.
