Grant Details

To help support the general operating costs required to maintain and run its facility and present innovative, educational exhibitions and public programs that enriched the lives of 70,000 visitors last year, the Montclair Art Museum respectfully requests a grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

Organization Background

Founded in 1914, the Montclair Art Museum (MAM) and its Yard School of Art engage a diverse community through distinctive collections of American and Native American art, exhibitions, and educational programs that link art to contemporary life in a global context. MAM's exhibitions feature first-time presentations of under-recognized artists, examine little-known aspects of major artists' careers, investigate art movements, and illustrate the interrelationships between American and Native American art. MAM collaborates with art and community partners in educational and public programs that include lectures, studio-art classes, guided gallery tours, curriculum development, teacher training, family-day festivals, cultural and musical performances, and visual arts outreach. In recent years the Museum has broadened its reach and increased its visibility, and last year served more than 70,000 visitors, one of the largest and most diverse audiences in its 99-year history.

MAM's Director since January 2009, Lora Urbanelli, was Executive Director of the Farnsworth Art Museum and before that the Interim Director of the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. She has an MFA from Syracuse University and a BA, magna cum laude, from Rutgers University. Gail Stavitsky, MAM's Chief Curator since 1994, is a recognized scholar of American Modernism who received her Ph.D from the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU. MAM's Curator of Contemporary Art, Alexandra Schwartz received her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and a B.A., magna cum laude, from Harvard University, and served recently at MoMA as co-editor and contributor, Modern Women: Women Artists at The Museum of Modern Art. Gary Garrido Schneider is an artist, educator and museum administrator who served as MAM's Director of Education from 2002-13. In June 2013 he was promoted to Deputy Director. He has over 18 years experience connecting a broad range of audiences to the arts, holds a B.F.A from Parsons School of Design and is currently enrolled in the Bank Street College Leadership in Museum Education masters program. Prior to joining MAM, Director of Development Susan Wall, spent 16 years as the Director of Development at the Bard Graduate Center for Decorative Art, Design and Material Culture. She holds an M.A. in Arts Administration from Columbia University.
