To pursue the vision of the Music School project in the After School Center, continuing the growth and expansion of New City Kids corresponding with New City's ongoing Capital Campaign. New City Kids will continue offering exceptional performing arts opportunities for children and youth in Jersey City, and will grow in deeper collaboration with other organizations and the community.

Organization Background

The mission of New City Kids is: 'Loving kids for change to create a community of academic, leadership, musical, and spiritual development.' New City Kids was established in 2000 in an effort to provide teen leadership development and performing arts opportunities to at-risk, low-income children and teenagers in Jersey City, New Jersey. Our vision is to walk with a child from age six to age eighteen, setting these young people on a path of life transformation that will carry them forward for the rest of their lives. To this end we offer several key programs: including the After School Center, the Teen Life Internship Program, Summer Camp, and City Sail (a free sailing school). These programs all complement and support one another.

New City Kids' After School Center has capacity for 95 children at New City's primary location on Fairmount Avenue and added a second site on Vroom Street in 2011 that can accommodate another 55 children. The Center is open from 3-6 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the Jersey City Public Schools' school year and draws first-eighth grade students from local elementary schools.

The After School Center strives for excellence in three areas: providing outstanding education in the performing arts, giving strong academic support, and making the program available to low-income families. The After School Center offers performing arts instruction in dance, voice, bass guitar, keyboard, and drums.

Running parallel to the After School Center, the Teen Life Internship Program exists to provide high schools students with leadership and development opportunities, college preparation support, academic assistance, and life and job skills training. Teen Life Interns are employed in the After School Centers as tutors and class teachers for the children. The Teen Life Interns are highly trained and then take primary leadership roles in running the After School Center. But New City offers more than just a job for teens--we support teenagers with a holistic approach to leadership and growth.

Key personnel include: Rev. Trevor Rubingh, Executive Director; Josh Dornbos, MSW, Program Director; Deborah Lemmen, LSW, Assistant Program Director; Jeremy Jerschina, Director of the After School Center at 240; Jackie Thompson, former Teen Life Intern, now Director of the After School Center at Vroom Street; David Leitman, Music Director; Daymiris Gell, Teen Life Internship Director.
