For general operating support of NDW's programs, including high-quality dance performances in Jersey City and across New Jersey, arts education programs for Jersey City middle school and high school students, the creation and commissioning of new dance works, continued activities of the school of Nimbus Dance Works, celebrating and fundraising in connection with the company's 10th anniversary, and for other organizational development activities.

Organization Background

NDW's mission is to create and present innovative dance by bringing together top-tier dance artists, choreographers and other collaborators in a dynamic creative environment, and to deliver that work to diverse communities in unique and relevant ways. We accomplish this by retaining artists and collaborators whose artistic excellence is equaled by their commitment to making a difference in people's lives, and by engaging community members as audiences, participants and learners. Nimbus presents performances and programs on tour and in our hometown of Jersey City, New Jersey, where we are strongly committed to local audiences and partner organizations.

In addition to Nimbus Dance Works acclaimed professional dance company, the organization maintains a robust array of services and programs that serve the community particularly focused on populations underserved by the arts. The School of Nimbus Dance Works, centrally located in Downtown Jersey City was founded in September 2012 and has grown from 12 students to over 80 in just over one year. The school provides ongoing, technically rigorous training in Ballet, Modern Dance and other dance forms and maintains a policy of making dance training available regardless of family's/student's ability to pay. Nimbus' Jersey City Nutcracker production, now in its fourth year and one of Hudson County's largest annual performing arts events, draws together youth performers from Nimbus' school, from multiple public middle and high schools, and from several other local dance studios, to perform alongside the professional company in this fully-produced performance with full sets, costumes, and lighting. In 2013, 130 students will join 11 professional dancers in 8 performances that will serve over 2500 audience members, including over 1000 Jersey City school children. Additional educational programs include offsite programs at a number of Jersey City public schools, a new partnership with St. Joseph's School for the Blind, and the Dodge Dance Initiative working with 2nd graders from 3 Jersey City schools.

Nimbus Dance Works founder and Artistic Director Samuel Pott has received awards from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, performed as a soloist with the Martha Graham Dance Company in many of the world's storied theatrical venues, and teaches and creates dance works as a guest choreographer throughout New York and New Jersey. Since Nimbus's founding in 2005, the company has grown to serve more than 8,000 people each year with its performances and education programs. Nimbus performs throughout New Jersey and the Northeast U.S., including appearances at the world-renowned Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival and NJPAC. Nimbus' company dancers are drawn from top companies such as Martha Graham Dance Company, Twyla Tharp Dance, and the American Repertory Ballet. Supported by a professional administrative staff and teaching artists, the company engages diverse audiences (1) with a repertory that includes options for participation by pre-professional performers and (2) by teaching and mentoring students at varying levels of dance experience. For Nimbus, dance is both a vehicle for expressive, collaborative artistry and a force for community empowerment.
