Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre promotes an appreciation for Spanish arts and culture through concert and educational programs that feature dance, music, poetry and stories from Spanish literature. The Company is particularly well known for its cross-cultural programs that demonstrate the relationships of world cultures to the arts of Spain. In the coming season, Alborada Spanish Dance Theater will focus on Hispanic cultures, mainly Peru, Mexico and Ecuador through its popular 'Hispanic Tapas' and for its Home Season, will be collaborating with a well known New Jersey Tap Company. Artistic Director, Eva Lucena, holds the company to its mission to promote intercultural understanding. A protege of Domingo Reyes and Maria Alba, Eva has become an artistic icon in her own right, touring the Metropolitan area with her company of professional dancers and musicians for the past 35 years, 19 in New Jersey. Lisa Botalico, Gisele Assi, Ricardo Santiago and Arturo Martinez are world class artists who bring life and beauty to Alborada performances and artistic residency programs. Lisa is a protege of Manolo Rivera, Victorio, and Jose Molina and is a trained singer with a vast operatic repertoire. Arturo is a self-taught musical phenomenon who has performed with flamenco legends Jose Molina, Jose Greco and Chuni Amaya. Gisele Assi, principal dancer and choreographer, also teaches residencies in NYC and in Brazil. After learning a breadth of modern dance techniques at Ballet Hispanico, Ricardo Santiago studied flamenco dance with Nelida Tirado, Manolo Rivera, Luis Montero and others. He has toured throughout the U.S. and internationally and, together with Gisele Assi (also an accomplished Flamenco singer) appeared in Franco Zeffirelli's Carmen and The Metropolitan Opera's La Traviata. Company singer Dominico Caro sang for the great Jose Greco and for Pilar Rioja. Last year, a successful spring season concert featured the soloists of Alborada - Claudia Morena (classical and flamenco), Krystina Cardenas (Eva Lucena's protege), Eva Conti (also an accomplished French horn musician), and Teresa Rodriguez (who performs also in NYC and Atlantic City together with Krystina Cardenas). This year Alborada is bringing in Cristina de Jose, a young Flamenco artist from Venezuela, who has been performing in NYC and Spain. Alborada again intends to give full reign to its soloists this coming Spring. Another part of the mission is to bring the heritage of Spain to the underprivileged, which it does through Target-funded programs and other sponsors, and to bring an hour of happiness to communities such as assisted livings and Adult Centers. In April 2013 the Company produced a free-to-the-public festival in the Parker Press Park, Woodbridge (styled after the famous Feria of Seville, Spain) under the auspices of the Township, which was attended by over 600 persons, many of whom could not afford to pay ticket prices, and this has now become an annual festival. Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre prides itself in bringing quality and authenticity to the audiences it serves, and is committed in continually fulfilling its mission.
