Organization Background

For 30 years Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art co-founded by a group of visual artists, has played a notable role contributing to New Jersey's cultural vitality, presenting renowned exhibitions, arts-related public programs, and innovative educational projects for youth. It fosters excellence in the visual arts, serves as a catalyst for inclusiveness and diversity, and promotes cross-cultural dialog. It seeks to bridge racial, cultural and ethnic divides. Public understanding of the visual arts is strengthened through collaboration and community-based educational programming. Since its founding Aljira has supported more than 1,850 artists through more than 225 exhibitions and programs for the public.

Aljira's leadership is epitomized by Executive Director and co-founder, Victor L. Davson. A practicing artist with more than 35 years of achievements in the US and abroad, he has led the organization to wide acclaim for its service to the Newark community and the state's cultural life. Among highlights of his leadership are: Aljira Design graphic studio which earned substantial revenue for 18 years; Aljira's participation in the IV Biennale International de Pintura, Ecuador; the NJ Governor's Award, 1996, 2002. Davson has served on various national and regional panels including NEA and Newark Public Arts Advisory Commission. A major capital campaign enabled Aljira to re-locate in 2002 to Newark's downtown arts district. The NJ State Council on the Arts has acclaimed Aljira for excellence in the visual arts, and as a Major Arts Institution for six successive years through 2013.
