For general operating support of a two-year public policy fellowship program for emerging Newark-based leaders.

Organization Background

Leadership Newark (LN) is an organization which offers a community leadership development program for adults who live, work or volunteer in the civic life of the City of Newark. The leadership program is a public policy enrichment fellowship born out of a desire to strengthen the City of Newark's civic infrastructure through preparing the next generation of leaders to serve in numerous professional, political and volunteer capacities in the largest city in the State of New Jersey. Founded in September 1998, the founders, (Thomas O'Neill and Richard Roper) felt it was necessary to arm and prepare a strong cadre of citizens of diverse backgrounds with in-depth knowledge on a wide range of public policy issues who will be prepared to take on a variety of leadership roles in New Jersey and/or in the City of Newark as the city undergoes an evolving renaissance.

During the organizations 16-year history, LN has recruited 17 classes, graduated 15, while always running two cohorts in the midst of the 2-year fellowship program. The initial class had a cohort of 40 thereafter the classes have an average class size of 34 participants. However, experience has proven working with no more than 30 Fellows per class is ideal, yet we remain heartened to receive upwards of 75 applications for admission each year. Holding true to our mission, Leadership Newark continues to create a network of established and emerging leaders with the drive, knowledge, skills and connections needed to improve Newark's future and thus benefitting New Jersey as a whole. The current executive director has served since the inception and was selected based on her diverse background as a former elected official in New Jersey and well rounded experience in government and healthcare, which has served the organization well in her ability in shaping the public policy enrichment training offered.
