Organization Background

Monmouth Conservation Foundation was founded in 1977 by Michael Huber, Judith Stanley, and a small group of dedicated visionaries. For nearly four decades, the mission of Monmouth Conservation Foundation has been to acquire, hold, preserve, and protect the farmland, open space, and natural resources of Monmouth County, New Jersey.

Monmouth Conservation Foundation is the only countywide land trust, having directly preserved more than 6,500 acres and collaboratively preserved more than 16,500 acres.

Since its founding, Monmouth Conservation Foundation has been steadfast in its mission to preserve open space. In February 2014, Monmouth Conservation Foundation achieved land trust accreditation from the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance.

The land trust accreditation validates the commitment of Monmouth Conservation Foundation to ensure a permanent legacy of land conservation throughout Monmouth County. Also, the accreditation signifies Monmouth Conservation Foundation has met stringent national quality standards that are recognized by the land conservation community.

As noted, Monmouth Conservation Foundation is committed to protecting farmland and open space. Easements, new parks, and expanded parks in urban areas also are key components of the organization's work.

In order to continue its mission in the years ahead, Monmouth Conservation Foundation realizes it must attract, inspire, and engage young families. Thus, Monmouth Conservation Foundation has launched Kids for Conservation, a program that inspires children to play outside, explore the outdoors, and develop an appreciation for -- and a love of -- nature.

Over the past year, Monmouth Conservation Foundation has continued to strengthen its advocacy position by assuming a leadership and funding role with the New Jersey Keep It Green Coalition.

Monmouth Conservation Foundation's executive director, Bill Kastning, participates in the Keep It Green Coalition's KIG Campaign Committee. As a founding member of the coalition, Monmouth Conservation Foundation advocates strongly for a permanent and stable source of funding for open space, farmland preservation, and historic preservation in New Jersey.

Also in 2013, Monmouth Conservation Foundation hired a consultant to drive the organization's advocacy, education, and outreach activities -- the last of Monmouth Conservation Foundation's strategic goals to be implemented.
