The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO) was formally established in 1922 after the merging of a number of local ensembles. In 1968, professional musicians replaced volunteers and Henry Lewis became the first African-American director of the NJSO--or any major symphony orchestra. More recently, the NJSO performed for the opening of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in 1997, which was later broadcast nationally for an audience of more than 4,000,000 people.
