New Jersey Tap Ensemble's mission is to preserve and perpetuate the American art form of rhythm tap dancing through public performances, arts education, special programs, new works, and artist development. Founded in 1994 by professional tap dancer and Artistic Director Deborah Mitchell, the company has continuously served audiences and artists from diverse economic and ethnic backgrounds, primarily in the state of New Jersey. Collectively, the company represent 9 of NJ 21.The organization is comprised of an adult company called the First Company (18 and older) and a pre-professional company (12-17) called NJTAP2. While the organization's mission continues to focus on the preservation and perpetuation of the art form, its traditions and legacy, current activities and long range planning will embrace the changes reflected in the art form from new artists, new directions and voices by a new tap generation.
Key administrative staff of the organization include, Deborah Mitchell, Executive/Artistic Director, Kenneth MacDonald, Business Manager, Ann Kern, Bookkeeper, Christina Balas, Graphic Design/Marketing Consultant. Key artistic staff include Deborah Mitchell, Executive/Artistic Director, Karen Callaway Williams, Maurice Chestnut, Parris Mann, teaching artists and assistants to the AD; Jeffry Foote, teaching Artist; Dana Fisch, Dance Captain; and Kyle Wilder, Arts Education, Young Artists Consultant. The organization also relies on a core of volunteers including ADA Consultant, 10 parent volunteers for young artists, prop maintenance and management. The Executive/Artistic Director, Business Manager and Bookkeeper are salaried personnel. Key artistic staff are contracted artists and Christina Balas, Graphic Design/Marketing Consultant provides her services as in-kind support.
