NSA was incorporated in 1968 by two Newark school teachers, Stella Lass and Saunders Davis in response to the Newark riots and community need for high-quality, low cost arts education. Since its inception, over 43,000 individuals have benefited through class instruction and thousands more through performances/ visual arts exhibitions.
NSA provides private and group instruction in the performing and visual arts for people of all ages, regardless of their financial need or artistic ability. Through training and performances the School enhances the lives of individuals, families and the community. (Mission Statement).
Scholarships are available for students who demonstrate talent. Since 1997, NSA/NJPAC Jeffrey Carollo Scholarship program has attracted some of the best talent in New Jersey. Significant numbers of NSA alumni have gone on to careers in the arts including tap dancer Savion Glover who was in the first round of Geraldine R. Dodge Scholarship recipients.
