Organization Background

Incorporated in 1985, Passage Theatre, Trenton's only professional theatre, makes its home in the historic Mill Hill Playhouse. Its mission is to create and produce socially relevant new plays and community-devised arts programming that transforms the lives of individuals and community. Community partnerships facilitate a solid future and a thriving creative life for Passage's artists, students, partners, and audiences. Core values are to prize works that testify to the resilience of the human spirit; create a nurturing and supportive environment for our artists; raise the aspirations of Trenton's youth through our education/mentoring program; and contribute to the cultural and economic vitality of postindustrial Trenton. For the past 27 years, Passage has consistently presented the work of emerging and established writers giving a priority to writers from or with roots in New Jersey and plays frequently with a social justice theme. The mission was broadened in 1995 to focus on serving a culturally diverse community with an after school arts component designed to raise the aspirations of local youth. In 2009, Passage readjusted its priorities and became a community centered theatre company hiring artists from the New Jersey and PA area whenever possible. Through this more localized approach, artistic excellence has been sustained and audience loyalty and attendance has increased As the theater specializes with a more narrow focus on plays addressing issues pertaining to the society in which it resides, the impact of Passage is expected to expand.
