To support a comprehensive strategic planning process and priorities that emerge from that process for NJ Spotlight.
NJ Spotlight is an award-winning news service launched in 2010 by veteran journalists covering public policy issues and how those policies affect communities. NJ Spotlight focuses primarily on education, energy, environment, healthcare, and public finance policies and their effects on communities. This year, NJ Spotlight was named the state's "best independent online publication" by the New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists. In recent years, we earned First Prize for public service in online news from NJSPJ and in 2011, we won the Online News Association's award for "General Excellence" in our category, cited by judges as the "the best example in the nation for independent statehouse reporting; small but mighty." We continue content distribution partnerships with all major public media outlets in the region, including WNYC-New Jersey Public Radio, WHYY Public Radio in Philadelphia and South Jersey, and WNET Public Television in New York City. We also have a formal content-sharing agreement with Philly.com, the online site of the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Daily News. NJ Spotlight is funded by a combination of foundation support, earned income and donor gifts. About a third of our revenue is earned income, including advertisements, sponsorships, and content sharing. Revenue-generating programs include public roundtable discussions held throughout the state on key policy issues, as well as webinars.
