Organization Background

Founded in 1978 by Ricardo Khan and L. Kenneth Richardson, Crossroads is committed to works that examine life, history and culture of people of African descent. Since its founding Crossroads has filled an otherwise empty space on America's cultural canvas, with a body of work that remains unparalleled today. Crossroads has broken ground through the development of its original works from throughout the African Diaspora and its positive imaging of black life, history and culture for a uniquely multicultural audience. These honest portraits of a people and their stories have helped move the consciousness of community forward by building bridges of dialogue, understanding and veracity between people of all backgrounds in this society and the world. Crossroads has been responsible for premiering over 50 original plays that have gone on to become some of the most important in the American theatre canon. Equally significant is the fact that many writers and artists of prominence today proudly acknowledge their beginnings at Crossroads. Even those who didn't begin careers at Crossroads would soon consider it an artistic home, luminaries such as the Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Ntozake Shange and August Wilson among the many. For its decades of service and distinguished contribution to the modern theatre movement, Crossroads was presented the Tony Award
