To expand and disseminate the Dance To Learn curriculum to greater numbers of students and teachers through NJ's professional dance community.
Dance New Jersey (DNJ) is a service organization committed to reaching new audiences and promoting the energy, excitement and excellence of dance and dance education in the State. In service to its mission, DNJ seeks to develop a strong funding base for dance in New Jersey, raise public awareness by cultivating relationships with community and civic organizations, funders, policy makers and presenters, and foster the artistic and administrative growth of its members through resource sharing, dialogue and collaboration.
DNJ was founded in 1998 as a catalyst for collaboration and peer support among the New Jersey dance community. DNJ relies on its diverse membership and Board of Trustees to help dictate programming and shape annual goals and objectives. The membership includes over 400 dance students, friends of dance (press, retirees, dance enthusiasts), dance professionals (artists, choreographers, dance educators) and organizations and institutions (universities, dance studios, performance venues). The Board of Trustees is similarly diverse, comprised of representatives from member organizations, community businesses, related arts groups, and individual artists.
In April 2004, Dance New Jersey was granted state affiliate status to the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO), a link which further unites New Jersey's professional dance community and dance education community. As a state affiliate of NDEO, Dance New Jersey serves as an information hub for its members on national and state arts education issues. Through the affiliation with NDEO, the organization oversees chapters of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts in several New Jersey high schools and dance programs.
Lisa Grimes has been DNJ's Executive Director since August of this year. She holds a BFA in Dance from Montclair State University and is the Managing Director of Freespace Dance. As Managing Director is Aymara Carpenter, who holds a BFA in Dance and a Master in Public Administration from the University of Oklahoma. Maureen Glennon Clayton, Artistic Director of Moe-tion Dance Theatre was elected Board President this year as well.
