General operating support to engage communities in urban forestry and stewardship programs and activities.
The NJ Tree Foundation was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1998 and began with a statewide, free tree giveaway program to celebrate Arbor Day. Since then, the NJ Tree Foundation has expanded to include programs that provide large trees for free to Camden and Newark residents, statewide landscaping and tree planting services, green job training for men under parole supervision, public education about trees, memorial tree planting and maintenance, fruit tree plantings, and special projects based on community need. In 16 years the NJ Tree Foundation has planted more than 200,000 trees across the state and engaged hundreds of thousands of volunteers in the process. The mission of the NJ Tree Foundation states our dedication to planting trees in New Jersey's most underserved neighborhoods. Through tree planting, volunteerism, and partnerships, we assist numerous communities in improving their environments and quality of life.
The NJ Tree Foundation operates with a very small staff that includes four full time individuals, one part time individual, and three seasonal individuals. Lisa Simms, NJ Tree Foundation Executive Director, oversees all programs and manages program contracts. Ms. Simms has more than 20 years of experience in the urban forestry field. James Cunningham, Urban Forestry Technician, supervises the seasonal staff and conducts year-round tree maintenance and planting. Jessica Franzini, Director of Urban Forestry Initiatives and Program Director for Camden, manages the Camden Urban Airshed Reforestation and oversees the Newark Program. Elena Lopez, Program Director, manages the Newark Renaissance Trees Program. Ms. Franzini and Ms. Lopez also teach educational workshops in Camden and Newark to give residents the knowledge to become long-term tree stewards in their communities. The Tree Foundation provides volunteer opportunities for thousands of individuals each year. As volunteer time reflected a $255,446 in-kind contribution to the NJ Tree Foundation last year, volunteers are an extension of our staff and a key element in the success of Tree Foundation programs.
