The Newark Boys Chorus School is celebrating its 45th year of educating middle school boys in the 2014-2015 academic year. Our mission is to develop our students into successful young men of sound character through rigorous academic and musical training. Alumni graduate prepared to succeed in the appropriate college preparatory high school and with the skills to be college-prepared and job-ready when they finish high school. NBCS has been in transition for the past year, bridging our impressive history with the need to keep pace with academic innovations occurring throughout Newark and greater Newark region.
Karl Held assumed the position of Head of School in August 2014. Prior to this appointment he served as President of the American Boychoir School in Princeton, NJ and was the Founding Executive Director of the Princeton Center for Arts and education. He has served as Sr. Advisor to the President of Gettysburg College for 12 years, and on the boards of the Leonard Bernstein Center for Arts and Education, and an advisor to the Kennedy Center's Education Department. He is also a TONY nominated Broadway Producer. Music Director Donald Morris, an educator for nearly 40 years, has worked at NBCS for more than 27 years and been a key leader of the institution through difficult transitions. Ulysses Morris was promoted to Academic Director in June 2013. He brings a wealth of experience in independent and public schools and was part of the leadership team turnaround at a failing school in Alabama. Two additional longtime faculty members retired in June 2013, and one in 2014 paving the way to complete the faculty redesign that was begun in September 2012. 2014 brings an increased concert touring schedule for the upper school chorus, offering rare experiential educational opportunities for the boys outside the classroom.
