General operating support and to engage in a strategic restructuring process while taking steps to re-establish PRC as an effective and fiscally sound organization.

Organization Background

The mission of the Passaic River Coalition (PRC) is to restore the Passaic River by improving and sustaining the integrity of our most precious resource, the waters of the Passaic watershed. We aim to improve water quality; protect water supplies; reduce flooding; promote watershed restoration and appropriate land use; provide watershed education and preserve environmentally important land.

Founded in 1969, PRC is the watershed organization for the Passaic River Basin of northern New Jersey and southern New York, a 935-square mile region of urban, suburban and rural areas, comprised of part or all of 118 municipalities in eight counties in New Jersey, and eight municipalities in two counties in New York, in which nearly four million people live.

From its inception PRC has educated the public and advised government agencies and other interests on many critical issues concerning the Passaic River basin, focused on flood damage reduction, wetlands protection, ground water protection, hazardous site contamination and its remediation, and revitalization of riverfronts. PRC has been instrumental in diligently facilitating change and securing consensus for improving the Passaic River and the quality of life for Northern New Jersey residents.

In the early 1990's PRC created a land trust, and has preserved over 1600 acres of watershed lands.

The Passaic River Coalition owns and is headquartered at Willow Hall in Morristown, a manor house built in 1848 as the family home of George Vail, owner of the Speedwell Ironworks, and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. PRC has undertaken the restoration of this important historic site.

PRC Board members have stepped up during the ongoing transition to many tasks of daily operations, as well as assessing and re-evaluating in a very hands-on manner how PRC will carry out its mission. Pat Huizing has been hired as the Interim Executive Director.
