To support public programing and artist residencies at ShuaSpace

Organization Background

Shua Group was founded in Jersey City in the year 2000 by choreographer Joshua Bisset. The mission of Shua Group is to create and support movement-based art in New Jersey, nationally and internationally.

Shua Group activities include staged contemporary dance performances and teaching and movement-based art in non-traditional performance spaces such as hillsides and parking lots. Shua Group has presented commissioned works in New Jersey, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Vermont and Texas; and internationally in Canada, Guatemala, Spain, France, Italy and Germany. Director Joshua Bisset has twice awarded choreographic fellowship from the state of New Jersey.

The company frequently involves untrained performers of all ages and invites viewers to directly participate in performance events. Writing about Shua Group's history of creating interactive works in non-traditional space, New Jersey Star-Ledger writer Robert Johnson recently wrote: "the [work's] strategy was meant not only to challenge the public (how badly do you want to see this dance?) but also to empower viewers encouraging them to overcome the habits of passive consumption."

Shua Group recently has acquired its own studio and production space. ShuaSpace is an intimate 600sqft street-side studio and presentation space located just 7 minutes walk from the Journal Square PATH station. The studio gives Shua Group the opportunity to both develop its own repertoire and promote local arts and culture.
