For general operating support of Mile Square Theatre's full season of productions and educational activities in 2015.
Mile Square Theatre (MST) was founded in 2003. A non-profit professional company, we produce contemporary and classical works of theatre and offer performing arts education programs. Our mission is to bring high-quality arts and cultural activities to northern New Jersey and the surrounding region.
In 2008 MST established residency, and within 3 years we developed a regular season, including a Young Audience show, two shows for adults, and our annual festival of plays about baseball, 7th Inning Stretch. In 2014, MST continued merger negotiations with Hoboken Children's Theater (HCT), with whom we have shared space and collaborated for many years; MST relocated to a space in northwestern Hoboken and launched a $1 million capital campaign to finance renovations. The new theatre and education venue, which the combined organization will call home once complete, will open in early 2015.
MST is committed to providing affordable arts opportunities that demonstrate creative excellence. As a professional theatre, we compensate all production artists and are able to bring exceptional talent to the region. We make every effort to ensure that admission is broadly accessible, and we routinely offer free and pay-what-you-will performances and discounts. HCT programs, which will continue under the governance of MST following the merger, are also fairly priced, and hold to the same artistic standards: all HCT teaching artists are accomplished professionals.
With the exception of 2014, when our transition to the new venue necessitated a truncated season, our audience has increased each year since our founding; around 20 percent of patrons now reside outside Hudson County -- in New Jersey and New York City's five boroughs. Our move and the finalization of our merger with HCT are projected to more than double our impact in three years.
Artistic Director Chris O'Connor founded MST in 2003 and has served in his role since; he has more than 30 years of experience as an actor and director, and holds a theatre teaching position at the University of Miami, Florida. Chase Leyner and Herb Alicandri founded HCT in 2002; Chase had a successful career in theatre and dance; Herb has a background in architecture and lighting and sound engineering. The artistic leadership team also includes Anne Teutschel, a producer, director, and actress, Joseph Gallo, a playwright, and Matthew Lawler, a seasoned actor in stage, film, and commercials.
