For general operating support to preserve New Jersey

Organization Background

New Jersey Conservation Foundation is one of the nation's leading statewide land conservation organizations. Our mission is to preserve land and natural resources throughout New Jersey for the benefit of all. We value teamwork and comprehensive action, community-based conservation, innovation, leadership, organizational excellence and integrity and partnerships.

Our founders came together in 1960 to preserve what is now the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Morris County, the first federally designated wilderness area east of the Mississippi. Since then, working with landowners, public agencies and other conservation partners, we have helped protect more than 125,000 acres of forest, farmland, wetlands and other natural ecosystems. We now manage approximately 27,000 acres -- more land and conservation easements than any other nonprofit in New Jersey. We have been at the forefront of nearly every major initiative in the state related to land preservation, water quality and protection of natural resources. We have been instrumental in passing dozens of landmark environmental laws, including the Freshwater Wetlands Protection Act, the Agriculture Retention and Development Act, and the Pinelands and Highlands regional planning acts. During the past five decades, we have advocated forcefully against inappropriate development and the diversion of preserved lands to incompatible uses. We offer technical assistance, advice, advocacy and organizational support to the conservation community statewide and have helped foster the formation of many conservation groups across the state. Of the nearly 100 conservation groups in New Jersey, we have partnered with 78 percent and provided direct support to more than 40 percent.
