Organization Background

NDW's mission is to create and present innovative dance by bringing together top-tier dancers, choreographers and other collaborators in a dynamic creative environment, and delivering that work to diverse communities. Our collaborators are committed to making a difference in people's lives. We engage community members as audiences, participants and learners. Nimbus performs on tour and in our hometown of Jersey City, New Jersey, where we are strongly invested in local audiences schools and partner organizations. For Nimbus, dance is both a vehicle for expressive, collaborative artistry and a force for community empowerment.

In addition to Nimbus Dance Works' acclaimed professional dance company, the organization offers programs that serve the community, focused largely on populations underserved by the arts. The School of Nimbus Dance Works, centrally located in Downtown Jersey City was founded in September 2012 and has grown from 12 students to over 120 in just two years. The school provides technically rigorous training in Ballet and Modern Dance and maintains a policy of making dance training available regardless of a family's ability to pay. Nimbus's Jersey City Nutcracker production, now in its fifth year and one of Hudson County's largest annual performing arts events, draws together youth performers from Nimbus' school and from multiple public schools to perform alongside the professional company in this fully-produced performance with sets, costumes, and lighting. In 2014, 60 students will join 11 professional dancers in 10 performances that will serve over 3000 audience members, including over 2000 Jersey City school children. Additional educational programs include offsite programs at six Hoboken and Jersey City public schools, partnerships with St. Joseph's School for the Blind, Horizon Health Center, and the Dodge Dance Initiative working with 2nd graders from 5 Jersey City schools.

Nimbus Dance Works founder and Artistic Director Samuel Pott has received awards from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, performed as a soloist with the Martha Graham Dance Company, and teaches and creates dance works as a guest choreographer throughout New York and New Jersey. Founded in 2005, Nimbus now serves more than 11,000 people each year through performances and education programs. Nimbus performs throughout New Jersey and the Northeast U.S., including appearances at the world-renowned Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Downtown Dance Festival in Battery Park City and NJPAC. Nimbus' company dancers are drawn from top companies such as Martha Graham Dance Company, Twyla Tharp Dance, and the Scapino Ballet/Rotterdam.
