For general operating support of American Theater Group, resident professional theater company at the New Hamilton Stage in Rahway NJ.
American Theater Group produces new and classic works primarily by American Playwrights with an emphasis on the development of new works and the rediscovery of undeservedly neglected older ones. ATG engages audiences by making theater's glorious possibilities accessible to the diverse community in which we live, through remarkable professional performances as well as quality arts-in-education programming. A cornerstone of Rahway's Arts District and an independent member of the Union County Performing Arts Council (UCPAC), American Theater Group is the resident professional theater company at the new 199-seat Hamilton Stage.
Originally conceived and founded in 2012 by three theater veterans (Jim Vagias, Joe Mancuso and Rick Sordelet), the introduction of American Theater Group coincided with the opening of Rahway's Hamilton Stage. The first production was a reading of a play by theater critic Peter Filichia in June of 2012 and, beginning the following fall, ATG presented its first full season (2012-13) with presentations of ZERO HOUR, Cy Coleman's New American Musical Reading Series, Eight Plays in Eight Days, and HIMSELF AND NORA, the latter of which was hailed by the New York Times as "...handsomely produced by the American Theater Group." The 2013-14 season featured the critically acclaimed CHARACTER MAN, Cy Coleman's New American Musical Reading Series, BUBBLE BOY (a new musical writer by CInco Paul and Ken Daurio the creators of the hit films "Despicable Me", "The Lorax" and "Despicable Me 2"), IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING, and MARRY HARRY. The 2014-15 featured Ray McAnally's Size Matters and Jonathan Larson's TICK, TICK, BOOM! and will close with Bill Bower's tour-de-force one man show BEYOND WORDS. Of the above projects , all except TICK, TICK...BOOM! and IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING were New Jersey Premieres, and three were World Premieres.
In addition, in partnership with Playwrights Theater of New Jersey and sponsored by New Jersey Theater Alliance, Rahway High School, ATG is launching "New Voices, New Works " a series of short plays written by high school students and performed by professional actors.
