About Little Kids Rock
With its mission "ensure that every student has the opportunity to unlock their inner music maker" Little Kids Rock has quickly become the largest free music education program in the country. Having trained 2,500 teachers and served more than 350,000 students to date, Little Kids Rock has become a valued service provider to the U.S. public school system, and an educational reform movement uniting teachers nationwide.
We accomplish this by:
- Championing an innovative Modern Band music education that connects learning to the music that kids already know and love--styles including rock, pop, hip-hop, and reggae--performed on guitar, keyboard, bass guitar, and drums
- Recruiting, training, and equipping public school teachers to conduct music programs utilizing our methods and materials
- Partnering with public school districts to provide a quality music education to as many young people as possible--especially those in underserved communities
Little Kids Rock began in 1996 as an informal effort by David Wish to give his Bay Area second grade students a music enrichment program. Borrowing from friends and scouring area flea markets for instruments, he began offering free after-school guitar classes. What began as one teacher's effort to bring music instruction to a few dozen public school children has catapulted into a national nonprofit that has served hundreds of thousands of young people in 29 cities coast to coast. During the 2013-14 school year, Little Kids Rock served more than 134,000 young people by partnering with more than 1,200 teachers in public schools throughout the county.
