Grant Details

For support of free legal assistance for nonprofit organizations including those working in the environment, arts, education and media sectors.

Organization Background

The Partnership was founded in 1997 by members of the Westchester County, NY and Fairfield County, CT, corporate bar to provide legal assistance to nonprofits that could not afford to divert resources from programs to hire attorneys and to encourage pro bono service by attorneys at corporations. We serve NJ, CT and lower NY, north of New York City. We expanded to NJ in 2000, and merged with a similar Hartford organization in 2008. We assist agencies serving the disadvantaged, and environmental, conservation, arts and civic organizations, in part by recruiting and supervising corporate and law firm attorneys who help us advise more than 600 nonprofits annually without charge on compliance, contracts, governance, employment, environmental, fundraising, intellectual property, lobbying, mergers and real estate matters, among others.

Marcia Levy became the Partnership's Executive Director in November. Ms. Levy, who succeeds Richard S. Hobish, co-founder and first Executive Director, comes to the Partnership from Cardozo Law School where she was the Associate Dean for Career Services. Ms. Levy has extensive pro bono experience including positions at the Rutgers Law School Urban Legal Clinic, the Legal Aid Society and as Special Counsel for Pro Bono and Professional Development at Sullivan & Cromwell L.L.P.

Nancy Eberhardt, Director, New Jersey Program, is a graduate of Rutgers School of Law. Her previous private practice focused on environmental law and real estate transactions.

Christine Michelle Duffy, Senior Staff Attorney, graduated from Seton Hall University School of Law and was chief compliance officer and chief labor and employment counsel for an environmental services company.

Kent E. Hansen, Senior Staff Attorney, graduated from St. John's University School of Law, has been a corporate general counsel and is a corporate generalist, with wide experience negotiating contracts and in corporate secretarial and governance matters.
