For Sustainable Jersey's work throughout the State to empower communities to achieve their sustainability goals. This entails a comprehensive program of research, policy development, consensus building, outreach, training, technical support and funding that aligns the New Jersey's major resource organizations to collectively support local green teams in schools and municipalities as they move toward sustainability.
Sustainable Jersey is a 501c3 non-profit corporation that was founded in 2011. The mission of the organization is to "make a better tomorrow, one community at a time." This is done through municipal and school certification programs for sustainable development that combine clear standards for action, robust guidance and implementation support, and a suite of incentives. While the Sustainable Jersey program partners began work in 2006 and the municipal program officially launched in 2009, the nonprofit was not created until 2011. Sustainable Jersey for Schools launched in October of 2014 after two years of development.
