WFMU is an independent non-commercial freeform radio station broadcasting to the New Jersey - New York metropolitan area, and webcasting worldwide via the internet. The station emphasizes cultural diversity throughout its program schedule, stressing radio as a creative medium. WFMU maintains an online presence at wfmu.org, including six channels of full-time audio programming, over 10 years of audio archives, dozens of podcasts, multiple mobile applications, and the Free Music Archive, an open online music library.
The station is known for pioneering the integration of traditional radio with emerging web technologies. WFMU launched an online presence in 1991 (prior to the emergence of the world wide web), began webcasting full-time in 1997 and made all programs available upon demand in 2000. In 2005, WFMU became one of the world's first podcasters. In 2007, WFMU developed the world's first live audio stream for the iPhone platform. WFMU launched social commenting on its online playlists in 2008. WFMU's mobile apps contain interactive features that are still unmatched by other radio or TV apps.
Ken Freedman is the Station Manager of WFMU. Under his guidance, WFMU became independent of its original owner, Upsala College. Freedman developed WFMU's internet presence, making it one of the web's most popular radio destinations. Freedman has served on the board of science corporation New Brunswick Scientific and is a technology advisor to the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB). He has spoken at conferences sponsored by Google, NPR, O'Reilly Media, The Knight Foundation, Future of Music Coalition, and NFCB.
