William Paterson University (WPU) is a public institution of higher education in Wayne, New Jersey. It serves more than 11,400 full- and part-time students through five colleges: College of the Arts and Communication, Cotsakos College of Business, College of Education, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and College of Science and Health. WPU's mission incorporates teaching, research and creative activity, and service. Maintaining a tradition of leadership in general education and multiculturalism, it is committed to promoting student success, academic excellence, and community outreach with opportunities for lifelong learning. It offers baccalaureate, graduate degree, and certification programs for both traditional and nontraditional students. Its distinguished teachers, scholars, and professionals challenge students to high levels of intellectual and professional accomplishment and personal growth in preparation for careers, advanced studies, and productive citizenship.
The WPU College of Education (COE) has been preparing teachers since 1855, when it was founded as Paterson City Normal School. It currently provides training and certification in major content areas from Pre-K through 12th grade. The College of Education is currently partnering with the College of Science and Health to prepare for a second cohort of Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellows in STEM-related disciplines. These Fellows are committed to serve in high needs school districts, including Paterson.
The COE, through its Educational Leadership program, also provides high quality educational experiences designed to prepare candidates for future leadership positions. It is currently implementing its U.S. Department of Education Leaders as Learners grant, which is designed to recruit, train, and mentor principals and assistant principals for high-need schools and districts.
The mission of the William Paterson University of New Jersey Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) entity, is dedicated to secure philanthropic funding for the University through the identification and pursuit of private gifts, grants, and endowments. As the steward of these funds, the Foundation helps William Paterson progress as a preeminent public institution of higher learning.
