Grant Details

To launch five GreenFaith Circles, local networks of faith-based institutions partnering to increase the impact of environmental programs in communities across New Jersey.

Organization Background

GreenFaith is an interfaith environmental coalition based in Highland Park which educates, inspires and mobilizes diverse faith-based institutions in New Jersey and beyond as environmental leaders.

GreenFaith's programs include the Fellowship Program -- a training program preparing religious leaders for environmental leadership; the Certification Program -- a two-year program in which congregations conduct numerous environmental activities to become GreenFaith Sanctuaries; and the Environmental Justice Program, through which GreenFaith conducts Environmental Justice Tours in New Jersey's cities, and advocates and organizes for a healthy environment for these communities.

GreenFaith works to mobilize the state's culturally diverse network of over 7,000 faith-based institutions to become active in protecting New Jersey's land, air and water, and builds partnerships between the faith sector and state's environmental community.

Two GreenFaith staff will direct the Food Shield Program. Fletcher Harper, Executive Director and an Episcopal priest, has won wide recognition for developing GreenFaith's innovative programs. A graduate of Princeton University, he has directed GreenFaith's work since 2002, was recognized as New Jersey's 2007 Environmental Leader of the Year, and was named an Ashoka Fellow in 2011. Stacey Kennealy, Sustainability and Certification Director, wrote GreenFaith's Repairing Eden Guide on sustainable food for faith-based institutions - funded by Dodge - in use at over 400 faith-based sites. Before joining GreenFaith in 2006, Stacey worked with Rutgers' Director of Purchasing on "green" purchasing initiatives and on a Lawrenceville School environmental initiative. A Philadelphia resident, she was recently recognized as one of Pennsylvania's "Top 40 Environmental Leaders under 40."
