For general operating support of the restoration and preservation of the Hackensack River Watershed for the benefit of its people and its resident wildlife, and to support a shared staff attorney with NY-NJ Baykeeper.
Since our incorporation in 1997, Hackensack Riverkeeper has been a strong voice of advocacy for the Hackensack River and the Meadowlands. Our founder, Captain Bill Sheehan, began introducing people to their river in 1997, originally offering river trips aboard his personal fishing boat. Today, our organization accomplishes its mission of providing representation for the natural living resources of the Hackensack River through an array of environmental advocacy, education and conservation programs. Our focus is protecting and defending the environmental quality of the ecosystem of the estuary, river and watershed and the quality of life for all who inhabit the Hackensack River watershed.
From modest beginnings, we have grown to include dedicated full and part-time staffers and thousands of volunteers who advocate in the legal and administrative systems, conduct river cleanups, eco-cruises, guided paddles and provide educational programs to hundreds of people. By engaging people in the issues, conservation, and recreation on the river, the Hackensack Riverkeeper has inspired a dedicated constituency for the river.
