Grant Details

For general operating support of programming and advocacy to advance environmental and economic resiliency for New Jersey's Delaware Bayshore communities.

Organization Background

The Bayshore Center at Bivalve was founded in 1988 by its current Executive Director with the goal of restoring the 1928 oyster schooner A.J. MEERWALD to become a hands on classroom and symbolic rallying point for Delaware Bay - building a constituency of stewards for this exceptional place. The concept struck a chord in the community - one of NJ's most struggling townships in its most depressed county with some of its richest landscapes, vibrant ecosystems and an incredible maritime heritage.

Now entering its 28th year and 21st sailing season, BCB's mission is to inspire people to take care of the environment, the culture and the history of New Jersey's Bayshore Region through education, preservation and example.

Though BCB serves people across NJ, the Bayshore communities of Cumberland County receive free programs targeted to connect children and families to their natural environment and cultural heritage.

From 1995- 2011, BDP worked to purchase and restore the 1904 Oyster Shipping Sheds in Bivalve to provide a base for its programming. Now open, the Bayshore Center houses the Delaware Bay Museum & Folklife Center, gathering places, exhibit space, classrooms, art gallery, caf
