For general operating support of 2016 productions and education programs.
Mile Square Theatre (MST) was founded in 2003. A non-profit professional company, we produce contemporary and classical works of theatre and offer performing arts education programs. Our mission is to bring high-quality performing arts activities and educational programs to northern New Jersey and the surrounding region.
In 2008 MST established residency, and within three years developed a regular season, including a Young Audience show, two shows for adults, and our annual festival of original plays about baseball, 7th Inning Stretch. In 2015, MST merged with Hoboken Children's Theater (HCT), with whom we have shared space and collaborated for many years; together, we relocated to a space in northwestern Hoboken and began construction on a new venue in October. The new theatre and education venue, which the combined organization will call home once complete, will open in March 2016.
MST is committed to providing affordable arts opportunities that meet the highest standards of creative excellence. As a professional theatre, we compensate all production artists and are able to bring exceptional talent to the region. We make every effort to ensure that admission is broadly accessible, and we routinely offer free and pay-what-you-will performances and discounts. Our newly added education programs, offered throughout the academic year, are also fairly priced and hold to the same artistic standards: all teaching artists are accomplished professionals, and many HCT alumni have enrolled in well-regarded college theatre programs.
With the exception of 2014 and 2015, when our transition to the new venue necessitated truncated seasons, our audience has increased each year since our founding; around 25 percent of patrons now reside outside Hudson County, up from 20 percent in 2014 -- in New Jersey and New York City's five boroughs. Our move and merger are projected to more than double our impact by the end of 2018.
Artistic Director Chris O'Connor founded MST in 2003 and has served in his role since; he has more than 30 years of experience as an actor and director, and holds a theatre teaching position at the University of Miami, Florida.
