To provide support for education and community outreach programs, contemporary art exhibitions, and hands-on art making.
The Art Center's long-standing mission statement is "bringing art and people together," supplemented by a vision statement elaborating organizational goals. Through strategic planning now underway, the board and staff have concluded that this statement is too vague and open-ended. While not yet finalized, our current mission statement draft reads: "The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey nurtures the capacity for personal expression, expands the creative experience and fosters stronger communities by empowering people to see, make and learn about art. Through exhibition, studio school and community programs, the Art Center engenders connection, creative curiosity and risk-taking among community members."
We have changed the vision statement to "To create an inclusive, welcoming and diverse community where lives are transformed and enriched through the shared experience of art." Both statements are supported by organizational values including: connection, inclusive community, creative curiosity and risk-taking, holistic approach and advocacy.
We should note that our recent participation in the Dodge Leadership Training Series helped galvanize the commitment of board and staff to focus intensively on mission, vision and values.
