Organization Background

Arden Theatre Company is a professional regional theatre, providing award-winning productions and educational programs to the Greater Philadelphia community. Founded in 1988, our mission is to bring to life great stories by great storytellers -- on the stage, in the classroom, and in the community. Each season the Arden produces five Mainstage and two Children's Theatre shows that include a range of classics, contemporary pieces, musicals, and new American theatre. The mission reflects the importance of our education programming, Arden for All, which benefits more than 6,000 young people a year from low income neighborhoods.

Located in Old City, the Arden's two-theatre performing-arts complex helped Old City emerge as one of the region's most popular destinations, with a significant economic impact on the revitalized neighborhood. In 2013, Arden Theatre Company opened the Hamilton Family Arts Center, our new facility dedicated to the Arden's education programs and new play development. Situated just three doors north of our main building, the Hamilton Family Arts Center represents a major expansion for the Arden's educational programming and impact on the community. Michael Nutter, then Mayor of Philadelphia, said, "This new building is a reaffirmation of the Arden's commitment to the children of this city. The Arden is really a model for what art can do in every neighborhood."

We have received numerous honors, including 63 awards and 307 nominations from the Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre. The Arden is a winner of four "Theatre Company of the Year" designations (Philadelphia Inquirer), six Philadelphia Magazine "Best of Philly" awards and five "Best of Philly Kids" awards. We have also received the prestigious "Great Friend to Kids Award" from the Please Touch Museum for our Arden Children's Theatre work. For our accessibility efforts we were named a "Keystone of Accessibility" by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The Executive leadership of the company is comprised of all department heads. Two of our three founders are still consistently involved in the theatre's day-to-day operations: Amy Murphy serves as Managing Director and Terrence Nolen is Producing Artistic Director.
