For general operating support of a public policy fellowship program for emerging Newark-based leaders.

Organization Background

Leadership Newark (LN) is a non-profit organization operating in the State of New Jersey. LN offers several programs, in particular the flagship leadership development program for adults who live, work or participate in the civic life within the City of Newark. In 1997 Leadership Newark founders, Thomas O'Neill and Richard Roper began the planning for an organization that would offer a public policy leadership development program for established and emerging leaders committed to the betterment of Newark. The public policy fellowship program was born out of a desire to strengthen the City of Newark's civic infrastructure through preparing the next generation of leaders to serve in numerous professional, political and volunteer capacities in the largest city in the State of New Jersey. The fellowship program would recruit qualified professionals who live, work or participate in the civic life within the City. The first group of 40 participants began their 2-year fellowship in September 1998. The founders felt it was necessary to arm and prepare a strong cadre of leaders of diverse backgrounds with the depth & knowledge needed on a wide range of policy issues while ensuring the nature of their work on behalf of the community in the public policy arena would have a positive impact on the City as it undergoes an evolving renaissance.

In addition to the flagship fellowship program, the organization offers other enrichment opportunities including an annual public policy summit and a non-profit board service-training program, with plans to re-introduce a junior fellowship program designed for high school students. Leadership Newark's mission is to be a catalyst to engage, empower, connect and improve the network of community and civic leaders as they each commit to build, strengthen and serve for the common good. Since it's inception, LN's alumni network is 600+ strong as we bring our vision to fruition, of developing the skills and knowledge of a diverse network of established and emerging leaders who will collectively and individually enhance and strengthen the vibrancy and future growth of the greater Newark region.
