Organization Background

The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company was established to create new, innovative dances, to preserve/advance the dance tradition of the Chinese American community, and to maintain a world-class dance company that promotes global understanding. The Company develops culturally rich, artistically excellent programs for public main-stage performances, innovative educational residencies in K-12 schools, assembly performances, long-term community dance residencies, and national/international touring.

Established in 1988, the Company began with a performance of which the New York Times said "Nai-Ni Chen's dance...can slake our thirst for art." With support from the NJSCA, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the NEA, the Company has grown to be one of the most important resources for Asian American contemporary and traditional culture in the U.S. It is one of a few professional Asian American dance companies that maintains an active national and international touring schedule with presentations and commissioned works by such prestigious presenters as the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and the Joyce Theater of New York.

The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company has toured 6 countries in Europe, plus Russia, Mexico, Guatemala, China and Korea. Prestigious commissions for Nai-Ni Chen's work have come from the New Jersey Ballet, NJPAC, Dancing in the Streets, The Joyce Theater Foundation, the Lincoln Center Institute, La MaMa etc, Ballet Met, Dancing Wheels, among others. In 2016, Nai-Ni Chen will set one of her signature works on the graduating class of the Alvin Ailey School.

Well known for Nai-Ni's work with contemporary musicians and composers to integrate live music with dance, the Company is constantly challenging the boundaries between discipline, genre and cultures.
