Organization Background

New Jersey Tap Ensemble was founded in 1994 by professional tap dancer Deborah Mitchell. The mission of the organization is to preserve and perpetuate the American art form of rhythm tap dancing through public performances, arts education, special programs, new works and artist development. For the past 21 years the company has continuously served audiences and artists from diverse economic and ethnic backgrounds, primarily from the state of New Jersey. The organization is comprised of 2 companies --the First Company (adults 18 and older) and pre-professional dancers (ages 12-17) called NJTAP2 together representing 11 of New Jersey's 21 counties. While the organization's mission continues to focus on the preservation and perpetuation of the art form, current activities are focused on collaborations with arts partners, implementation of public relation and social media strategies, adaptation of arts education models, and looking towards artists, staff and supporters who have invested years in the organization for future guidance and leadership.

Key administrative staff include Deborah Mitchell, Executive Director and ADA Coordinator; Kenneth MacDonald, Business Manager, Ann Kern, Bookkeeper/Adm. Assistant, Christina Balas, Creative Designer/Marketing Consultant. Evan Ruggiero, Advisory Board Consultant. Key artistic staff include Deborah Mitchell, Artistic Director; J. Leonard Oxley, Music Director; Karen Callaway Williams, NJTAP2 Coordinator; Maurice Chestnut, Choreographer/Teaching Artist; Kyle Wilder Teaching Artist and Young Artists Consultant; Jeffry Foote, Teaching Artist. The organization also relies on 20 volunteers. The Executive/Artistic Director, Business Manager and Bookkeeper are salaried personnel. All key artistic staff other than the Artistic Director are contracted artists. Christina Balas, Creative Designer/Marketing Consultant provides her services as in-kind support.
