To support free legal assistance to nonprofit organizations in New Jersey including those working in the environment, arts, education and community information sectors.

Organization Background

Pro Bono Partnership's mission is "to provide business and transactional legal services to nonprofit organizations serving the disadvantaged or enhancing the quality of life in neighborhoods in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Substantially leveraging the impact of its in-house legal staff, the Partnership annually recruits and mobilizes hundreds of attorneys from major corporations and law firms to donate their time and expertise on behalf of its nonprofit clients, enhancing their ability to improve conditions in their communities."

Pro Bono Partnership was founded in 1997 to provide legal assistance to nonprofits that could not afford to divert resources from programs to hire attorneys and to encourage pro bono service by in-house counsel. After expanding to NJ in 2000 and merging with a similar Hartford organization in 2008, the Partnership now serves the tri-state area of NJ, CT as well as several counties in New York. In 2015, we assisted nearly 700 nonprofits on more than 1,530 matters, serving the disadvantaged and enhancing our communities by recruiting and supervising 1,060 corporate and law firm attorneys who advise on legal matters. Matters related to compliance, contracts, governance, employment, environmental, fundraising, intellectual property, lobbying, mergers and real estate matters, among others.

With the exception of a modest processing fee for assistance with incorporation and tax-exemption and small registration fees for workshops/webinars that encourage attendance, we continue to provide our services without charge. As a result, our clients can utilize their limited resources towards the direct delivery of services and programs for the community rather than towards legal fees.
