General operating support to advance local sustainability and action in New Jersey communities through municipal and school certification programs and strategic initiatives.
Sustainable Jersey is a non-profit corporation that was founded in 2011. The mission of the organization is to "make a better tomorrow, one community at a time." This is done through a bottom-up meets top down collaborative process to set standards, develop guidance and assistance programs, and coordinate resources.
The focal point of the effort are municipal and school certification programs for sustainability that combine clear standards for action, robust guidance and implementation support, and a suite of incentives. While the Sustainable Jersey program partners began work in 2006 and the municipal program officially launched in 2009, the nonprofit was not created until 2011. Sustainable Jersey for Schools launched in October of 2014 after 2 years of development.
Through a formal agreement, Sustainable Jersey is managed by the Sustainability Institute at the College of New Jersey. The Sustainable Jersey Board of Trustees includes leaders representing municipal governments, school districts, business, academic and statewide advocacy organizations as well as ex-officio members from the NJ League of Municipalities, NJ School Boards Association, NJ Department of Environmental Protection, and the NJ Board of Public Utilities.
