For arts-integration professional development of new middle school science and art teacher teams and strengthen the current STEAM teams.

Organization Background

Stevens Institute of Technology, founded in 1870, creates new knowledge and educates and inspires students to acquire competencies needed to lead in scientific discovery and in the creation of new enterprises. Stevens has a history of merging engineering and artistry as demonstrated by one of its illustrious alumni, Alexander Calder, who is recognized as one of the most influential sculptors in modern art.

Established in 1988, the Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) at Stevens develops and supports effective innovative curricula and professional development and conducts research in order to inspire, catalyze and strengthen scientific, technological, engineering and mathematics literacy for K-12 and higher education. CIESE's professional development programs have impacted more than 30,000 K-12 educators and nearly 9 million students worldwide. By exposing students to innovation and engineering in their K-12 education, CIESE is preparing the next generation to be successful in an increasingly technological, global economy and to contribute to solving the critical problems that face humanity.

The proposed program will be led by J. Adam Scribner and Kate Soriano, Science Professional Development Specialists at CIESE. Adam is an experienced science teacher and has led CIESE STEAM and other STEM teacher professional development programs for middle and elementary school teachers, including our engineering design curriculum. Kate was a practicing geologist, science teacher and professional developer for K-12 programs at the Liberty Science Center before joining the CIESE staff, and now continues to lead professional development programs for K-12 teachers. She also has a special interest in the arts, having volunteered her time in various organizations for almost thirty years.
